AbstractA single axle testing trailer (20 ton) with two steerable 18.4–38 tractor tyres which may be free rolling, braked or hydraulically driven was used for measurement of side force characteristics on different soft surfaces and a side force model is proposed for a grass covered surface. A tractor or combine travelling across a slope must be steered against the slope to maintain directional stability. The corresponding lateral and longitudinal tyre forces are of vital importance for both stability and traction performance. The recorded side forces on a pasture were higher than the values predicted by existing models. The original model was therefore amended to compensate for rolling resistance and soil build up against the tyre flank. This amended model fitted the observations more closely but the calculated side forces for both high traction and braking coefficients were still in excess of the recorded values. The proposed model may be used to predict tyre forces on soft surfaces from tyre and soil data.
