California companies produced first polyurethane foam in United States in 1948, using German patents which became public domain after World War II; today, national volume produced and sold is about 425 million lb, of which 1/3 is rigid foam; greatest single use of rigid in-place urethane foam in western states is in insulation of refrigerated railroad cars, truck bodies, and trailers; other important applications are shipboard containerization, building insulation, modular panels, boats, ships and marine salvage, military packaging, and furniture.
