Fortuna is first of two identical sisters to be built by Howaldtswerke Hamburg for UK Tankschiff Rederei GmbH; patented new system calls for complete separation of cargo and ballast spaces; system is based on conventional center and wing tank arrangement in which cargo center tanks have greater breadth and ballast wings lesser breadth than is normal; length oa 755 ft 7 in., breadth molded 105 ft 9 in., depth 59 ft 7 in., dw 54,559 tons (metric), cargo capacity 65,750 cu m; service output of Howaldt turbine is 16,000 shp at 100 rpm.
