Hydraulically actuated track performance measuring device was built by Bell Telephone Laboratories, Chester, NJ, to study feasibility of self-propelled underwater cable-laying trencher; hydraulic motor drives track with continuous speed control from zero to maximum; test track is suspended from traverse carriage by two track loading cylinders; cylinders control effective weight sensed by soil and are kept in vertical alignment by cylinder positioning system; drawbar dynamometer, held horizontal by leveling system, measures traction developed by test track.
