It is suggested that problems of shafting effects on reduction gear alignment, tail shaft casualties, alignment of shaft bearings, etc, will be alleviated, if design procedures are complemented by consideration of minimum bearing spacing and low frequency cyclic stresses; effect of these 2 considerations on design of shaft system are shown; nomograms and tabular data are provided for developing preliminary characteristics.
