In injury study, presented at 10th Stapp Conference by University of California, door region was listed by accident investigators as fourth leading area of injury; 2-yr research was carried out by Fisher Body Div; time crash situations were simulated and analyzed, field data studied, and various approaches to side protection investigated; low-weight, high-strength steel beam was developed and positioned horizontally in door; supporting body structures were reinforced; resultant structure reduced penetration into passenger compartment during side collision tests by causing deflecting action between two cars, and by preventing ride-over of striking vehicle into struck car; basis for static laboratory technique of testing that measures strength of side impact structure has been developed.
