Description of metal airscrew; important speed races since 1923 won by machine fitted with this type of airscrew; thin-blade section; aerodynamic efficiency does not fall off at very high wind speeds; designing airscrew for last Schneider race; 4 types for each of engines (geared and ungeared), and best selected by trial; first to give maximum possible efficiency without regard to airplane interference; three others designed by varying characteristics of original ideal screw; better suited for direct-drive engines than those of geared type.
