New York Central's first installation, in service only 2 months, has increased efficiency of operation 50 per cent; retarders permit 2-trick operation; track and signal plan showing track layout, grades, and location of retarders; retarders controlled from 3 towers; there are 33 car-retarder units; locking prevents switch operation under car; retarders are operated normally by 250-volt direct current supplied from 30-kw.
