Top shield and trial of novel (though unsuccessful) method of reinforcing anchorage for pushing jack were interesting points in driving of pipe culvert through fill of Davenport, Rock Island and North Western Railway; purpose was to drain slough where storm-water from city drains was impounded by railway fill, which was built on 6-ft. bed of mud or silt.
