Considering fibers as flattened ribbons with only their top and bottom surfaces of consequence, structure of paper can be described in terms of 3 bonding states of surfaces; one part is free on both surfaces, second is free on one and bonded on one, and third is bonded on both; weighted summation of 3 fractions equals overall fraction of fiber surface bonded, relative bonded area, RBA; it is concluded that RBA is one parameter which uniquely fixes structure of idealized sheet.
