Use of high power gas turbine plants for ship propulsion is being developed under U S Maritime Administration research project; attention is being directed to lower costs of manufacture, installation and maintenance, reduction of crew effort, simplification of components and integration of auxiliaries and controls; Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, Div of United Aircraft Corp, proposed simple cycle aircraft type gas turbine, adapted to marine environment, with 2-stage power turbine; plant under development by Gen Elec Co is blending of industrial jet engine and steam turbine design which would burn Bunker-C type fuels.
