Aspects of need, safety, economy; use of nuclear power for merchant shipping is not urgent, but advantage for naval vessels is clear; possibilities of accident, casualties and disaster from outside sources, for which examples are given, suggest certain safety requirements; costs are shown by comparison for nuclear and steam turbine tanker plant, and 3 ways for reducing reactor fuel costs indicated; 5000-hp seaborne reactors would provide basis for practical research.
