Feasibility study of free field and duct propulsion systems for submarines or surface ships; optimum system, using largest possible magnetic fields, would propel 600-ft submarine in salt water at 10 knots with efficiency of less than 8%; other possibilities are increasing water conductivity by seeding, hydromagnetic boundary layer control and hydromagnetic auxiliary propulsion, but for presently available field strengths these effects seem too small to be useful.
