During manufacture of highly stressed propulsion shafting for Canadian naval vessels for use in cold Atlantic waters, concern developed over erratic impact values obtained at desired yield strengths (45,000-49,000 psi); ambient and low temperature impact properties can be improved by small additions of manganese and vanadium; most suitable properties for shafting should be developed, after normalizing and tempering at 650 C, by composition C 0.35-0.45%, Mn 0.90-1.20, Si 0.15-0.35, S 0.04 maximum, P 0.04, and V 0.12-0.18%; material should also be suitable for liquid quenching.
