Measurements of side force produced by lateral thrust unit installed in bow of model hull indicate that severe losses in side force can arise if unit is used at low forward speeds; loss occurs mainly as result of reduced pressures acting on hull near duct outlet, which arise through interaction between emergent jet and flow past hull, and depend markedly on ratio of these 2 velocities; by installing unit very close to keel, and by using contra-rotating propeller system of small diameter, side thrust characteristic may be improved.
