Lateral thrust units and propulsion devices that can also be used for manoeuvring may be considered as active manoeuvring devices unlike most rudders. Apart from lateral thrust units, the devices considered in this chapter are steering nozzle propellers, azimuth propellers, waterjet propulsion and cycloidal propellers. Each device is described in some detail, how it functions in manoeuvring a ship is explained, some design considerations are mentioned and an analysis given to allow the MMG model to be used in the numerical simulation of manoeuvres by ships fitted with the device. There is a description of some special features of these devices.
