Cathodic protection of ballast tanks, which has been in use for about 10 yr with good results, prevents formation of corrosion areas in ballast tanks of ships sailing in clean trade and of pitting in ballast tanks of ships in dirty trade; suitability of alloyed zinc as anode material for protection of tanks as proved by various tests and measurements is described.
