Research at Brit Ship Research Assn, on interaction between long superstructure and main hull girder, resulted in 2 methods for calculating deflections and stresses; first is based on experimental work on steel box girders at Imperial College and uses relaxation techniques while second is based on plane-stress theory in conjunction with empirical data derived from measurements on several ships during static bending tests; shipboard measurements are required; stress measurements on 40,000-ton gross liner are described and compared with calculations.
