Term "stern gear" is used to include such components as tailshaft, stern tube, stern tube bushing and stern gland; with single screw ships design must cater for reasonable life expectancy, despite enormous overchanging weight of large propeller designed to absorb 15,000 to 25,000 shp at about 100 rpm; premature service failure of many stern gear arrangements for these vessels, corrective methods, and proprietary design (Algonquin) which appears to overcome shortcomings of other designs are considered.
