Pump design features, requirements imposed by system, choice of pumps and drivers, and aspects of automation, with references to installations in various ships; scope is confined to systems incorporating single-stage centrifugal-type cargo units with individual pump capacities of 11,000 U S-gpm (2500 cu m/hr) and above, except where special designs have to be considered; use of Vac-Strip system to utilize main cargo units as high-capacity stripping pumps, advantage of being able to eliminate conventional stripping systems with their fittings and fixtures, and new method of clean ballast pumping are discussed; some suggestions for examination of existing "Rules" are made.
