Program set up at Marshall Space Flight Center to develop its own electronic controls that would position torch running on carriage, on nonprecision track, within 0.010 in. or so of weld joint so that design tolerances could be easily maintained at greatly reduced tooling costs; controls were developed that are simple, stabilize quickly during warmup, are accurate and may be used when welding metals of different thicknesses.
