During development of Skylark upper atmosphere research vehicle by Royal Aircraft Establishment, it was shown that addition of boost phase would give two-fold advantage over single stage vehicle, powered by Raven motor alone; available space on Skylark launcher at Woomera, South Australia, restricted parallel length of motor body for boost motor to 29 in. and motor diameter to 17 in.; characteristics of boost motor, designated "Cuckoo", in particular, charge characteristics, composition of finally selected composite plastic propellant, igniter characteristics, and motor development; leading physical and internal ballistic characteristics of Cuckoo motor are shown in table.
