Locomotives of these two types are suitable for use in fiery mines and in industrial service where fire risk and smoke have to be avoided; fireless steam locomotive is practically identical with ordinary steam locomotive except that it has no firebox, smoke tubes or chimney; fireless locomotive is very economical but its range is limited from 2 1/2 to 9 miles per charge; in modern compressed-air locomotives, bottles are filled at pressure of 200 atmos so that considerable radius of action is obtained; particulars concerning typical modern locomotives.
