Present-day knowledge of problem is confined to belief that provided longitudinal stress figure determined on certain common assumptions as to character of loading does not exceed certain rather arbitrarily chosen limit the ship structure should not show signs of general weakness; there is also an approximate condition governing sufficiency of edge attachments of plating.
