First aircraft to feature wings whose sweepback may be varied in flight; X-5 will have all advantages of conventional wing aircraft in takeoff, climb, maneuvering, and endurance, and will be capable of very high speeds; ship will be used as flying laboratory by NACA to investigate aerodynamic effects of changing degree of sweepback during flight; length 33 ft 4 in.; height 12 ft; span 32 ft 9 in.; weight 10,000 lb; 4900-lb thrust developed by axial flow turbojet engine.
