Design for oceanographic and meteorological research ship was prepared by builders, VEB Mathias-Thesen-Werft in collaboration with Soviet Academy of Science, and was for full-scantling ship with three continuous decks; hull length oa 407 ft 5 3/4 in., breadth molded 55 ft 9 1/4 in., depth molded to upper deck 35 ft 5 1/4 in., draft 19 ft 6 in., displacement 6681 tons, dw 1986 tons; main propulsion is by two 6-cyl MAN engines built by VEB Halberstadt, and each rated 4000 bhp at 225 rpm; photographs of portions of 29 laboratories, and ship arrangement plan are included.
