Desirable characteristic of space vehicle is ability to make large plane changes; to conduct such changes in in-orbit mode requires verysubstantial velocity increment; alternate method, namely, synergetic maneuver, is considered which implies entering atmosphere, flying turn using lift of vehicle, and returning to orbit; effect of variable aerodynamics (in which lift/drag ratio decays at high altitude) is to reduce substantially synergetic efficiency from values indicated by analyses using constant aerodynamic characteristics; completion of turn in somewhat less than full orbit is advantageous.
