Current status of batteries is discussed which includes primary cells, nickel-cadmium, and silver-cadmium secondary batteries, silver-zinc primary and secondary batteries, and high-energy-density systems; current status of fuel cells, in particular, modified Bacon, ion exchange, free-electrolyte, capillary-type, hydrazine and hydrocarbon fuel cells; molten salt systems are becoming significant electrochemical sources, although they are not envisioned for space use; performance characteristics of various batteries and fuel cell systems.
