In test of forecasting capability of variables, auto registrations (by county for years 1950 and 1960) for New York Metropolitan area were extracted from State Vehicular Records and used as data base along with census data describing social and economic factors of predictors; equations were derived from 1950 data, applied to 1960 data, and checked for accuracy with auto registration figures for 1960; techniques for deriving total auto registrations for area are examined as well as methodology employed to factor up small area predictions to this control total; recommendations are offered for process of setting up techniques for estimating and distributing auto ownership.
