Use of flue gas as means of excluding air from ships' tanks, thus preventing formation of explosive mixtures, was first started about 10 yr ago; brief review of conditions which prevail in ships' tanks, way in which use of flue gas reduces operating hazard, equipment employed, and factors to be taken into account in considering use of this specialized equipment.
