Vehicle noise resulting from vibration excited by drive axle can be measured and controlled; modifying geartooth geometry to assure optimum design can then be achieved; further benefits are obtained through determination of critical path of vibration transmission from axle into passenger compartment, pointing way to vehicle suspension revisions for additional noise control; calculation of gear noise sensitivity index, development of allowable gear angular displacement factor, and table of conversion of sound pressure level from decibels to microbars; sample test data and application of data.
