Preliminary investigation was carried out to determine levels of lateral acceleration and distance over which they occur on different types of road; tests were completed by same driver on highway, major trunk roads, rural route and urban roads; highway test was carried out on M6 from Stafford to Preston and back, distance of 125 mi and average speed of 64 mph recorded; results from survey of road systems are shown; driver survey and test equipment employed; tests have provided data useful in evaluating roadholding requirements of tires for different road systems.
