Liege-Welkenraedt route involved heavy engineering work and provides through electrified services; difficulties were encountered due to enlargement of many tunnels to provide electrical clearances for overhead line; line has 20 tunnels and 23 bridges; tunnel length varies from 635 to 43 m; brick tunnel linings were removed and replaced by concrete blocks; illustration of traveling formwork; one tunnel was opened into cut; reconstructed line will have speeds reaching 160 km/hr.
