Review of experimental work, model and full scale, carried out or in progress in various NATO countries, to determine ground effects associated with VTOL aircraft operating close to ground; if VTOL aircraft is to operate successfully from unprepared or semi-prepared sites, attention must be paid to problems of surface erosion and of entrainment of dust and debris in recirculating flow; effect of downwash on pressure distribution on aircraft structure; types of VTO L aircraft considered are those using free-propeller or ducted-fan systems or hot-jet lifting engines; jet-flap or deflected slipstream aircraft and helicopters are not included.
