History of aircraft compasses is highlighted by continual increases in directional gyro accuracy, but there has been little improvement in slaved (magnetic) performance; studies, undertaken by Sperry Phoenix Co, to determine reasons for limitations of slaved compasses; development of compensation schemes to accomplish following objectives -- remote compensation of static errors, automatic compensation of errors in flight, and new electronic slaving techniques; C-12 system is capable of providing 0.25° accuracy over most frequently travelled airline routes, and of operating accurately in magnetic mode over 99% of earth's surface.
