Lock, which will allow vessels of up to 100,000 tons dw to obtain access to port installations in Antwerp, will measure 1640 ft in length by 187 ft across; it is located 50 mi inland up Scheldt estuary; first section of basin which will connect new lock with existing port area over total length of 4 1/2 mi was completed in Oct 1962; canal 1/2 mi long will link lock and river; gates will weigh 1500 tons; construction of quay walls for lock has also begun.
