Self-propelled crane was built for Port of London Authority by Werf Gusto of Schiedam in association with Holland Cranes; basic requirement was for operation, without assistance of tugs, in all weather conditions up to Beaufort force 7 both within non-tidal dock systems and on tidal river, and ability to make passage between up river docks to Tilbury in reasonable time, irrespective of state of tide; hull pontoon length oa is 180 ft, breadth 58 ft 6 in., depth molded 13 ft; capacity of main hoist is 60 tons, and hoist block can be double reeved for 120-ton lift; propulsion power is provided by 6 8-cyl Rolls Royce diesel alternator sets, one of which is spare.
