Aircraft utilization is affected by numerous factors some of which are controllable whereas others are not; paper is directed toward factors over which some level of control can be exercised, such as route structure and market characteristics, length of flight, route terminal considerations, schedule frequency, characteristics of markets (business or vacation type), connecting service, and aircraft characteristics; aircraft versatility also affects utilization from flight hour and productivity viewpoint; percentage of out-of-service time required on any fleet for purposes of planned maintenance programs will likewise have effect on utilization.
