Recent work on Head-Up Display (HUD) has shown properties of continuous transition, easy learning and accurate use; use of HUD in manual landing suggested application as monitor for automatic landing and for directed take-off; developments in display techniques led to proposal for electronic flight instrument display (EFID), suitable for head-down and head-up presentation; similar flexible techniques applied to topographical map display suggest general-purpose plan position display, complementing "front elevation" display of flight instruments; these ideas are combined in proposal for advanced cockpit layout.
