Study reflects pilot's viewpoint on handling qualities and control problems of VTOL aircraft and function of autopilot; methods of control vary according to function and design concept of aircraft; paper is based on participation of Honeywell Inc in VJ101C supersonic fighter of West Germany; aircraft and its operation in VTO L regime is described together with autopilot design which improves aircraft handling; low inherent stability is augmented by three axis damper to point where disturbances are better damped than for conventional light aircraft; attitude feedback provides wings level reference that aids pilot in landing and take-off phase; additional control stick steering features afford pilot proper stick sensitivity and damping.
