Paper shows that variable sweep compensates for environment of SST and provides solutions to stability and control problems; landing configuration (wings forward) approximates that of moderately swept conventional airplane; high span in low-speed configuration is compatible with good roll control; low roll inertia in high-speed configuration allows high roll acceleration; landing configuration has stable thrust-speed relationship; motions of aerodynamic center caused by wing sweep, Mach number, and aeroelastic distortion can be played against each other to minimize trim drag and to maintain good maneuverability.
