This paper identifies cause of premature cracking of axles with inboard bearings as being bending-mode oscillation of axle; it points out importance of gear-tooth separation produced by torsional oscillations in drive-motor system in both right-angle and parallel-drive gear failures; unique technique of simultaneous measurement of impulse and thermal loads on wheel tread is explained and test data are presented; relation between wheel impact loads and dynamic behavior of rail joints is shown.
