Salvage work required 18 mo of preparatory work, most of which was accomplished under water; salvage required: removal of three top decks, removal of all partitions, furniture and other inflammable material, closing 16 cargo ports and 356 air ports, removal of about 10,000 cu yd of mud, closing all promenade deck openings, closing all pipe lines in vessel leading from one compartment to another, installing 93 salvage pumps, with capacity of 155,000 gpm.
