Quick method for making qualitative cost analyses, using capital recovery factor; it is suggested that economic study, as aid in ship design, is best made in two stages; parametric analysis aimed at determining optimum ship, and determination of probable degree of profitability of chosen ship; table shows alterations in predicted optimum speed and capital recovery factor resulting from inaccuracies in cost analysis; it is concluded only four of major cost factors have any effect on optimum speed.
