Nonlinear equations of motion of ship having three degrees of freedom of heave, pitch and roll are investigated; it is shown that unstable motion may occur in any one degree through excitation by one of other two; instabilities occur when natural frequency in unstable motion is nearly one half of that of exciting motion, or when these natural frequencies are nearly equal.
