It is shown that transfer functions characterizing nonlinear response of ships in irregular seas can be obtained from high order moments of ship motions by extension of standard spectral-analysis techniques; hence, full-scale measurements can be used to determine, for example, coefficients of excess wave resistance and lateral drift; method also has applications in model experiments.
