Range of variation of factors influencing exhaust temperature and peak pressure of diesel engines used on locomotives; it is shown how although exhaust temperature is influenced by number of factors including design and tuning, once correct exhaust temperatures, corresponding to full power condition in engine, have been established then these offer very sound guide to operating conditions and fault diagnosis.
