Active control techniques are now being considered as an alternative to passive silencing to reduce low frequency diesel engine exhaust noise. A review is given of the salient features of an active cancellation system for repetitive noise. A feasibility study is being undertaken on the use of an active system for the cancellation of the exhaust noise of a Class 56 locomotive and part of this study is a comprehensive survey of the noise. Details are given of the specification for the cancelling source derived from the survey data. Finally, the anticipated cancellation performance of the active system is discussed.
