Experience on maintenance and operation of broad gage diesel electric locomotives placed in service about 6 yr ago, for working heavy mineral trains on main and trunk-line routes; units were operated over wide range, returning to base depot on average once every week for maintenance requirements, servicing facilities being provided at various terminals; maintenance problems associated with piston rings and liner, engine deposits, fuel injection equipment, air compressor and vacuum exhauster, electrical equipment, and reclamation of parts are discussed.
