Diesel electric locomotives comprise units with power plant ratings of 1600, 2000, and 2400 hp in one standard basic structure; freight and passenger units are built around standard subassemblies interchangeable between units for either service and in any rating; all are powered by Fairbanks-Morse opposed piston engine; two different wheel arrangements are used.
